The Secure Internet Gateway appliance typically sits at the front of the network behind your firewall protecting your environment from spyware, adware, dialers, keyloggers, viruses, worms, trojans and other malware before they get the chance to enter your network through the web or e-mail.
In addition it is possible to add functionality with software such as McAfee’s anti-spam module that detects and blocks spam and phishing attacks using integrity analysis, heuristic detection, content filtering, blacklist and whitelist support, DNS blocklist support and Bayesian filtering. It is also possible to add web filtering software that looks to block web pages based upon your company’s required user policy and stop access to unrelated sites preserving bandwidth, reducing business risks, legal liability and improve employee productivity.
The Secure Internet Gateway appliance is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of company profiles from the small business through to organizations of around 1000 users. For companies above 1000 users they may wish to look at the other appliances in the McAfee ‘Secure Content Management’ range that are dedicated units for high volume message and web gateway traffic.
Management of the Secure Internet Gateway appliance can be done locally via a built-in browser-based system, or centrally on the network via the use of McAfee’s ePolicy Orchestrator.
