New Version of NetOp Remote Control
With the new release 9.1, Microsoft Vista is supported for all 32 bit versions. An enhanced remote Smartcard login functionality offers one of the strongest authentication and authorisation procedures available in security critical environments such as finance and insurance industries. The release also introduces a new and improved way to install and distribute the software as well as improved speed when remote controlling Linux systems. Improved software installation and distribution NetOp® Remote Control now includes a packaging and deploying tool, NetOp® Pack'n Deploy. It saves time and creates flexibility in the deployment phase by preparing and packing the msi and mst files used to deploy Guests and Hosts. "With NetOp® Remote Control you can basically remote control any system no matter what platform you are on. With the new version 9.1 we offer more flexibility, more security and easier and faster remote control functionality. For customers this translates into a more efficient use of IT resources and a higher ROI" says CEO Kurt Groth Bager, Danware. The new release supports Microsoft Vista for both Guest and Host modules as well as the optional components Security Server, Name Server and the Gateway.

McAfee to Acquire SafeBoot
McAfee has announced that it is to acquire SafeBoot. SafeBoot is a leading mobile data security company focused on data encryption. SafeBoot has been delivering encryption solutions for more than 16 years, pioneering enterprise-class encryption, and leading the mobile data security market with its fully integrated endpoint security and content encryption solutions.

SafeBoot provides McAfee with a leading-edge technology in one of the fastest-growing security markets— data protection. SafeBoot's solutions solve a critical pain point for customers, the loss of confidential and proprietary information. Many high profile cases of mobile or "in motion" device theft and loss, where sensitive information such as customers' social security numbers and credit card numbers were lost, highlight this "pain". McAfee can now offer a complete solution, which ensures that lost data is not compromised and enterprises have the management and audit capabilities required to meet regulatory requirements.

Is Perimeter Security Dead?
As recently discussed in TechRepublic. The network perimiter is becoming more transparent for many organizations and in turn are all the boarder security products people rely on working anymore? The products purchased a few years ago that worked so well as the first and last line of defence may now be missing vital flows of data/traffic as people become more mobile. (click here to visit the TechRepublic pages for full information).

Why Free software may not be the right choice!
Throughout the year we come across a number of organizations who for financial reasons have ventured down the route of using Free software. Whilst Free is always something we like to hear there may be a high price to pay in the end! I am certainly not suggesting there is a problem with Free software and there are many good Free tools available, but there are considerations to make before using these types of solutions. If someone does something for free, how do you know its any good? What product testing has been done? What sort of development work can be carried out if they are making no money? What assurances do you get? What product and technical support do you get? The list goes on. Although my main concern is the ‘faith’ aspect. Many times we have seen people suggest that the Free solutions they use are great, they have never had an infection and it’s never let them down. But scratch beneath the surface and you find the software has let things through its just not been capable or sophisticated enough to detect it and reported it, spyware is imbedded but the users are unaware and ultimately important personal and commercial data may have been compromised, `ignorance is bliss`! All we suggest is do your homework and think about the long term implications. Free may not be the cheapest option!
